Volterys (www.volterys.org) was created in January 2006 by Doctor Laurent Hermoye. Its aim is to put volunteers and researchers in contact on a consensual and well-clarified basis, , with the objective of realizing studies and tests on human volunteers.

Via a free registration, volunteers can signal their interest in participating to study groups in medical research and describe their profile, all with a high level of confidentiality, guaranteed by five systems of checks :

  • Registration is semi-anonymous : first name, postcode, town (localisation coordinates), E-mail address and telephone number (contact coordinates) are given, but family name and address are not.
  • Coordinates of a volunteer are transmitted to a researcher only after explicit agreement by both parties, in the context of a specific study.
  • Registration of researchers is manually validated and limited to recognised laboratories.
  • The database is highly secure and has been the subject of a full external audit by Sysdream.
  • Volterys has been the subject of a declaration to the Belgian Commission (nr VT4004242) for the Protection of Privacy.

We inform volunteers of their rights and the regulations governing medical research (Helsinki Declaration and transposition of the 4 April 2001 European Directive). More generally, we regularly add pages describing personal experience and concepts linked to medical research (informed consent, healthy volunteers, drug tests, etc.).

In the offers for studies which can be consulted by volunteers, researchers must mention start details, development, timing and potential risks arising out of the experience, the volunteer profile as well as potential renumeration.

Once the exchange of coordinates has been completed, Volterys remains at arms length between volunteer and researcher. The test is carried out only under the authority and responsibility of the researcher’s laboratory, which has to conform to all regulations in place.
